Finnish Police to monitor gambling marketing during World Rally Championship

The National Police Board of Finland is closely monitoring gambling marketing at the World Rally Championship (WRC) event and its side events from 3 to 6 August 2023. The Board is responsible for monitoring the provision of gambling services.

The National Police Board is concerned that some gambling service providers operating outside the Finnish system will engage in the event for marketing or advertising purposes. The National Police Board has notified event planners of the supervision effort and asked them to pass along the information to the teams, drivers, and side event organizers.

Veikkaus Oy, a Finnish state-owned betting agency has exclusive rights to provide and market gambling services in mainland Finland. The main goal of this system is to avoid gambling-related abuse and criminality, as well as to prevent and lessen the negative economic, social and health repercussions of gambling.

A statement released by the National Police Board declares that all marketing material in violation of the Finnish Lotteries Act, including the logos of gambling service providers, must be removed or hidden from sight.

“Attempts to market the brands of international gambling service providers and their games may appear during the event, in the form of logos printed on marketing materials. Moreover, marketing may appear along the rally route, on competitors’ clothing and fan merchandise, on video screens and light panels, in the background screens for interviews, and brochures, stickers and other giveaways,” says Johanna Syv?ter?, Senior Adviser of the National Police Board.

“The primary purpose of enhanced supervision is to prevent unlawful marketing effectively in advance. We hope that informing the event participants in advance will suffice as a preventive measure so that no unlawful marketing occurs at the event. If, for some reason, this is not the case, we are prepared to act quickly on this,” Senior Adviser Johanna Syv?ter? concludes.
