Remembering the legacy of Newcastle midfielder Tommy Cassidy

Tommy Cassidy, a name that echoes among football fans, particularly those of Newcastle United, sadly passed away this week. Born on November 18, 1950, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Cassidy was an extraordinary footballer who left a lasting impression on the sport.

Cassidy’s career took off at Glentoran, where he made a significant impact as a young striker. His talent was quickly recognized, and after scoring a hat-trick in the City Cup Final and netting four times in just six appearances, Newcastle United secured his services with a £15,000 bid. This move in October 1970 marked the beginning of Cassidy’s illustrious career in English First Division football.

At Newcastle United, Cassidy made over 180 appearances from 1970 to 1980. Primarily an attacking midfielder, Cassidy was known for his versatility, able to adapt to multiple midfield positions with ease. He played a crucial role in Newcastle’s success during the 1970s, helping the team reach the 1974 FA Cup final and the 1976 League Cup final. In total, he scored 28 goals for the club.

On the international stage, Cassidy earned 24 caps for the Northern Ireland national team. His international career began at the end of his first season in English football, and he was part of the team at the 1982 FIFA World Cup when Northern Ireland reached the second round. One of his most memorable moments was scoring the match-winning goal at Hampden Park against Scotland in 1974.

After his time at Newcastle, Cassidy moved to Burnley in 1980, where he made 72 appearances. He ended his playing career in Cyprus with APOEL, where he also began his managerial career. Cassidy managed several teams, including Gateshead, Glentoran, Ards, Sligo Rovers, Workington, Whitby Town, and Blyth Spartans. He guided Glentoran to an Irish Cup win in 1996..

Tommy Cassidy’s legacy will continue to inspire many future generations of footballers.
