Three responsible gambling projects receive KSA funding

The Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), is now piloting three projects to raise awareness of problem gambling.

The projects are being financed by the Addiction Prevention Fund (VPF) which aims to educate the Dutch public on the detection of gambling risks along with intervening in addiction and all its related harms.

The VFP

Established in 2021, the VFP was initially inaugurated to support the remote gambling marketplace, also known as teh KOA.

The KOA regulates online gambling in the Netherlands and subsequently collects a levy from high-risk game providers.

The VFP’s funding of the projects in question will also be overseen by the Ministries of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) as well as Justice and Security (JenV).

The specific factors in focus for these projects are addiction prevention, harm minimisation, research, education and improved supervision of the KOA market.

The projects

The first project is an e-learning programme being operated by the addiction clinic Jellink to train frontline professionals to be able to detect any early signs of problem gambling.

The second is led by Gelfit, a Money Fit platform which will add to its current services by integrating a problem gambling support segment. This segment will offer financial advice and assistance related to problem gambling.

The third project is named “Bright at School” and is being run by the Trimbos Institute. This initiative will encourage healthy choices among Dutch youth by supporting parents and school staff in identifying and mitigating risky behaviours associated with gambling.

In the past, the Trimbos Institute has constructed educational programmes similar to the one in question to combat drug addiction, alcohol abuse and promote online safety.

The Future

All three projects have been tasked with developing these programmes and should these pilots prove successful the KSA, VWS and JenV will strongly consider an extended funding package.
